HOW TO WASH YOUR JEANS
Want to keep your favourite pair of jeans looking their best? Well you’re in the right place. Give them their best shot of success by washing them right. There’s more to it than you think!
How to wash black jeans
Because there’s nothing worse than your favourite pair of black jeans fading. We’ve been there, done that. All it takes is a little extra attention.
- Remember to turn them inside out. It’s a good place to start for avoiding that dreaded fade.
- Similar to washing dark denim, you should use a gentle cycle with cold water. This will also help avoid shrinking too. Win-win.
- Aim to wash your black jeans separately (or with black clothes).
- Plus, using a detergent formulated for dark clothes is a good shout. And avoid bleach and harsh chemicals.
How to wash white jeans
White jeans, they’re a bold fashion choice with a sophisto feel. So you’ll want to keep them looking fresh for longer.
- Wash them separately or with other white clothes.
- Use cold water for slightly dirty jeans, and then warm water for even dirtier jeans.
- Use a gentle cycle and then go ahead and choose an extra rinse option to make sure that all that detergent is washed out.
How often you should wash jeans
Wash less, always. Aim to wash your jeans after three to ten wears. Less definitely means more. Trust us on this one. That worn-in look is what it’s all about anyway right?
- Reduce frequent washing by spot treating any stains with a damp cloth and mild soap. The quicker you notice a stain, the easier it’ll be to get out.
- Airing out your jeans for at least 24 hours between wear will help keep them fresh. Sounds weird but it really does work.
HOW TO DRY YOUR JEANS
Jeans shrinking in the drier. We’ve all been there. Here’s how to dry your jeans the right way…
Always opt for air drying your jeans when you can. It’s the best (and cheapest) option to prevent fading or shrinking your favourite pair.
- Avoid excessive heat from dryers and direct sunlight.
- Whilst drying, hang your jeans by the hem to avoid unwanted creases. You probably won’t even need to get the iron out.
Can you tumble dry jeans?
Definitely one to try and avoid. Opt for a natural drying method instead and hang dry your jeans, which will help prevent any shrinkage. Plus, it’s better for the planet too!
- The direct heat in the dryer can shrink, fade or yellow denim, and it can also cause damage to those specialist stretch styles. Saggy jeans are not the one.
- If you’re in a hurry though and absolutely must use a dryer, select a low or no heat cycle and use dryer balls to keep your jeans tumbling.
- Remove the jeans whilst slightly damp, then stretch the seams and hang them up to finish drying. Once they’re fully dry, hang or fold your jeans to store in a drawer or on a shelf.
Should you iron jeans?
Yes you can iron jeans but whether you should is debatable. Most jeans will keep their shape after ironing (if stored correctly – more on that later though). Just try to avoid ironing your jeans too often!
- When you do iron your jeans, use a low heat setting or even just the steam function if possible. Any jeans made from cotton could shrink when exposed to high heat.
- Tried steaming your jeans instead? Steaming is a great alternative to ironing. You can either use a hand steamer or use what you’ve already got and hang your jeans in the bathroom while showering (it’ll have the same effect on your jeans as an iron without overdrying or overheating).
THE BEST WAY TO STORE YOUR JEANS
Because your new favourite denim deserves a proper space in your wardrobe.

DENIM CARE TIPS
Hopefully you feel all clued up now on the best ways of washing and drying your jeans. There’s a lot of info but you’ll quickly get into the hang of it and it’ll soon become second nature. You only want the best for your jeans right!?! After all, they give you endless outfit options and they make you look and feel incredible. So what are you waiting for? Just before you go though, some final thoughts…
- You’ve definitely got that one fave pair (we all do) but try rotating your jeans where you can, so you avoid excessive wear on a single pair.
- We know some of you might favour a super tight or skinny pair of jeans, but try to avoid wearing anything too tight that might overstretch the fabric and cause it to become misshapen.
- Small repairs (like loose buttons or small tears in the fabric) are always an option too.
- Oh and did we mention that you should check the care label for specific care instructions? Hopefully you’ve done that already, but go and do that now if not.
