What to Wear to the Races: The General Etiquette

If you’re planning on heading to the races this summer, lucky you! It’s such a fun opportunity for dressing up and wearing a fabulous outfit, having a great time with family or friends, and just looking and feeling your best. So striking that perfect balance between elegance and comfort is key when it comes to ladies’ race day clothing, whilst sticking to specific dress codes. We’ve got some general guidance below, however customs will vary depending on the venue or the enclosure you find yourself in though, so make sure that you research your circuit ahead of the day.

General Etiquette Tips

Dress lengths - Skirts and dresses shouldn’t be too short. Knee-length or just above is safest.

Shoulders & necklines - Royal Enclosure requires coverage. Otherwise, modest is best.

Hats - Women’s hats should be worn throughout the day, not just for photos. Avoid hats that obstruct others’ views.

Shoes - Stilettos can be tricky on grass; consider wedges or block heels instead.

Accessories - Keep handbags manageable. Avoid overly casual items like backpacks.

Difference Between Ladies’ Day vs General Race Day

When it comes to ladies’ race day clothing compared to general race day outfits, the dress code does vary. Ladies’ day is definitely the dress-to-impress day with more rules, more glamour, and therefore more photo-ops. Think fascinators, elegant-but-a-little-extra dresses, and chic tailoring. Whereas the general race day dress code is slightly more relaxed, but just not quite jeans-and-a-tee relaxed. Think smart but comfortable so dresses, skirts, jumpsuits or nice trousers.

Race Day Dresses that Turn Heads

When you’re thinking about what to wear to horse races, a dress would be our go-to choice… but don’t worry we’ve also got some fabulous non-dress ideas too (further down this guide). But dresses for the races can be a whole minefield of its own. You’ve got everything from midi dresses and wrap dresses, to tea dresses and skater dresses. It really comes down to what you feel most comfortable and confident in, which is where we can help with our inclusive fits and flattering silhouettes. But not sure where to start? We suggest just trying something totally different. Race day really is a great opportunity to play dress up and just have some fun with your outfit.

When it comes to unique race day dresses for bringing the wow-factor, we’re talking bold prints, a dress with a statement sleeve, lace dresses, a pleated dress that’s both eye-catching and effortless, and a floral dress is always an occasionwear winner. And thanks to the unpredictable UK weather, it might be worth having a think about layering too. A blazer or a lightweight smart jacket is practical without compromising style.

Outfits for Race Day Beyond Dresses

Not in the mood for a dress? There’s plenty of other options. You can create a smart, sophisticated look with separates or a jumpsuit that’s equal parts polished and modern whilst keeping things effortlessly cool. And the bonus? You’ll feel comfortable and most likely adding pieces to your wardrobe that you can wear again and again (not just for the races). So it’s a win-win.

So your options… let’s start with a chic co-ord suit. A great-fitting blazer (or waistcoat) can be a statement in its own right. And it really does bring instant confidence to any outfit. Then you’ve also got a tailored jumpsuit which is a fun way of dressing smart. How bold or daring you go is your choice - you could even opt for a sleek black number and then make a statement with some accessories. And finally? A pair of wide leg trousers styled with a statement top is always a winning combo.

Accessories to Complete Your Race Day Look

Can’t afford a fancy new outfit? Or is the one you chose a bit of a blank canvas? Style it up with some simple accessories that’ll make a statement. From head to toe, there’s plenty of ways you can use accessories to switch up your look and add some wow-factor. We’re talking hats, jewellery, handbags and footwear for the finishing touch.

Have Fun with Accessories
Race day fashion is a great opportunity for stepping out of your comfort zone. Try and opt for something you wouldn’t normally wear, like a bold new colour or an iconic headpiece. And if the forecast is looking sunny, coordinating your sunglasses to your outfit can be a fun way to elevate your outfit too.

Wear Comfortable Shoes
Even though it’s so tempting to focus on style over comfort with your shoes, you’ll want to avoid high stilettos and opt for a heel with a more support and comfort. This is where a kitten heel, a block heel or a comfy wedge sandal comes in, as they’re just as stylish but are better for all-day wear.
